Advanced scoliosis training in Serbia – BSPTS L3

14/10/2024

At the end of September I spent 6 days with the Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) in Serbia along with a group of International teachers. Myself and two others Irish Physios, Emma Crawford and Roisin Egan, were on our level 3 course while the teachers were having their annual meeting. Some of you may remember that last year we hosted the level 2 course along with the teachers meeting here at McGowan Physio.

The course lasted for 6 days and it was a very intense learning experience. The focus this year was on adult scoliosis and post surgery patients.
We were under the guidance of the incredible Núria Puigdevall. Núria has many years of experience working with people with scoliosis and it
was a fantastic opportunity to watch her work and to get to learn from her. Dr Rigo could not be there in person but he gave lectures over the
6 days virtually.

While the learning will never stop, the completion of the level 3 course marks the end of my formal advanced certification. My hope now is to be able to educate other physios on the most up to date and evidence based treatment for scoliosis.
Currently in Ireland, physio treatment is not a part of the standard of care for patients with scoliosis. If we have more physios trained in Physio Scoliosis Specific Exercise (PSSE) then I hope there will be more conservative options to offer to families going through the diagnosis and management of scoliosis.
If you are a physio interested in learning more about scoliosis please get in touch. We have a half day intro to scoliosis course on 22nd November and in early 2025 we hope to host BSPTS level 1.
