Empowering Movement with the “Freedom to Move” Program

01/03/2025

Unlock Your Potential with Gentle Movement and Mindful Awareness

Chronic pain, health conditions, or trauma can make movement feel like an impossible task, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The Freedom to Move Program offers a welcoming and safe space for individuals facing challenges such as chronic pain, scoliosis, hypermobility, POTS, and other long-term health conditions. Led by Deirbhle Heffron, a skilled physiotherapist with experience in musculoskeletal care and trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation, this program aims to provide gentle, slow movement in a way that respects each participant's body and limits.

What is the “Freedom to Move” Program?

The Freedom to Move Program is a 45-minute online session that focuses on promoting well-being through gentle movement, body awareness, and relaxation techniques. This session takes place in a calm, online environment, ensuring accessibility from the comfort of your home.

During these classes, no movement is forced. Participants are encouraged to listen to their bodies and choose movements that feel right for them, with the option to skip a movement if necessary. This inclusive approach makes the program ideal for individuals dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, and other functional or dissociative symptoms. The movements are performed primarily while seated or standing, ensuring safety, comfort, and mindfulness at every step.

Who Can Benefit from This Program?

This program is designed for individuals aged 14 and up who experience:

  • Chronic pain or fatigue
  • Conditions like POTS, dysautonomia, or hypermobility
  • Trauma, anxiety, or fear of movement

If you're looking for a slow, mindful approach to moving your body, Freedom to Move might be the perfect fit for you. The program aims to build comfort and awareness in your body through gentle movement without any pressure to push beyond your limits.

Equipment You'll Need

To ensure a smooth and effective session, participants need a few basic items:

  • A quiet space
  • Google Chrome to open the video link
  • A chair with a firm back (preferably without wheels)
  • A yoga mat or comfortable surface to lie on
  • A cushion or pillow for support
  • A blanket for extra comfort
  • Loose-fitting clothes for unrestricted movement

How Does the Program Work?

The first step is to attend a Taster Class, which will be offered on March 5th. If the session is successful, a weekly group will begin in the second week in March, offering classes every Wednesday evening. For teens, the class will run at 7 pm, while adults can join at 7:45 pm.

Each group is initially limited to four participants, but the group size may expand to six depending on demand and individual preferences.

The program runs in four-week cycles. Note that the program works on a rolling basis, meaning participants must commit to the full four weeks. Drop-in sessions are not available to ensure consistency and group cohesion.

The Pilot Program and Referrals

The Freedom to Move Program will initially be offered to current McGowan Physio clients. If you're a McGowan client and your physiotherapist believes you may benefit from the program, they can refer you directly into the pilot group.

For individuals with complex or highly limited movement tolerances, an in-person 30-minute initial meeting will need to be scheduled. This session ensures that you feel comfortable, safe, and informed about the class before joining.

Key Features of the Program

  • Gentle Movement: The class is centered around slow, mindful movement that is designed for comfort and awareness. It includes sitting, standing, and occasional lying movements, all done at your own pace.
  • No Force or Pressure: Participants can opt out of any movement or skip it if they don't feel comfortable with it. This flexibility ensures that everyone can feel safe and empowered in their practice.
  • Trauma-Informed: The program is sensitive to those with trauma or anxiety, focusing on body awareness and breathing rather than intense physical movement or deep emotional exploration. The language used in the class avoids complex visualizations or analogies that may trigger distress.
  • Relaxation and Meditation: Classes incorporate relaxation and meditation techniques, promoting overall well-being and reducing stress.

Who is Not Suitable for This Program?

While the program is designed to be inclusive, it’s important to note that participants should be able to tolerate sitting for 45 minutes with potential transitions to standing. If you are unsure about your ability to participate, a one-on-one physiotherapy assessment may be required.

Additionally, the program works best when participants have choice and autonomy over their participation. It is not suitable for those who are being “made” to attend by a family member or other parties.

The Roll-Out Plan

Initially, the program will be offered to current McGowan clients, with a sample class made available to introduce the concept. Once the pilot phase is successful, the program will be available for new clients, with a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment to ensure the right fit.
