World Congress of Physiotherapy 2025 – Tokyo, Japan

01/08/2025

Niamh and Garett recently headed to Tokyo, Japan for the World Congress of Physiotherapy (WCPT). The congress was held at the Tokyo International Forum. It was an amazing opportunity both to learn and network as well as to experience a different culture. Japan is a beautiful, varied and vibrant country with kind, polite and helpful people.

There were over 5,000 physios in attendance at the physio Congress. It was a conference of a scale Niamh had never experienced before. Garett had previously attended WCPT in 2023 in Dubai where he presented one of his earlier studies from his PhD.

The best part of the congress was the fact that Garett was presenting. He presented his PhD research. His presentation titles were, “An evaluation of patient educational multimedia design in paediatric musculoskeletal healthcare: A systematic review” and “A feasibility RCT assessing multimedia design effects on patient engagement and outcomes in adolescents with scoliosis”. Niamh really loved getting to see Garett in his element. He is a natural presenter; very clear and concise. Many people were excited by his talks and asked him questions after he spoke.

There were several Irish physios also at the congress. Niamh’s sister Emer McGowan is a member of the committee of WCPT. She also spoke and chaired many sessions.

While in Japan Niamh and Garett both took the opportunity to explore. Garett headed off ahead of the Congress and Niamh spent a few days after the congress. Niamh’s highlight was getting to see Mount Fuji. Garett loved seeing the incredible history in Hiroshima and the bustling city of Osaka, Japan’s second largest city.

They both really enjoyed TeamLab and would highly recommend it for anyone heading to Tokyo.
