2022 Round-up

22/12/2022

2022 has been an incredible year. We celebrated our 1st Birthday this year and our team has grown from two to five!

We are loving the buzzing atmosphere in the clinic and enjoy seeing our regulars as well as lots of new faces coming in.

January, February and March

In January and February we were still settling into our new space. March was a fantastic month as Garett joined our team! It has been great having another physio in the clinic. Garett is exceptional at what he does and an added bonus is that he is great to be around. March also saw the arrival of our social media pages and they have really come to life as the year has gone along.

April

April was a busy month. We had loads of fun during our video day. It provided an opportunity for some of the teenagers who attend McGowan Physio to tell their scoliosis story. Friendships were made between a number of the young people attending that day and it gave the parents a chance to chat to other families who were on the same journey. Garett also got the chance to meet many of the families who attend the clinic. It was nice timing as he was just back from Germany learning all about the RSC Brace with Ortholutions and Dr Rigo.

Group classes also started in April and have been ongoing every month since.

May

May brought the addition of another team member, the wonderful Daniella. Daniella is our in-house Pilates teacher. She has been teaching 1:1 Reformer and it is such an asset for us to have this service at our fingertips. Niamh headed off to San Sebastian for SOSORT. SOSORT is a global conference focused on the conservative management of scoliosis. This is where the latest research and innovations are discussed. We also celebrated creating awareness of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in May.

June

June was Scoliosis Awareness Month. We enjoyed regular short videos from our video day and they all lead up to our mini documentary that went live on social media and on our website on Scoliosis Awareness day. It is an excellent resource and if you haven’t watched it yet I encourage you to! The young people express themselves so well and there are a few magic moments like Anna’s poem and Emma’s beautiful book to name a few. Niamh also went to London in June with Ciarnaid. They attended a conference hosted by Megan’s Wish. It was excellent and a great opportunity for Niamh to meet Prof. Alanay from Turkey and some of his team.

July

July was filled with the lightness that the summer brings. We launched our beautiful new website and with that came our very own blog! We hope that our website helps to educate anyone interested in the various speciality areas we work in.

August

In August we launched our “Ask the Physio” segment on our social media pages. Niamh also went to the Trinity Lab in St. Jamea Hospital and was put through her paces by Tony. Tony is undertaking scoliosis research on Physiotherapy. Many of the young people we work with have volunteered to take part and we are very grateful to them.

September and October

September was a month of learning. Niamh and Garett headed off to Barcelona to complete their training in L1 BSPTS method under Dr Rigo. It was a very intense 6 days but worth it all as they both passed their exam. September was also the month we offered a free scoliosis screening service.

October was our Birthday month. We celebrated being open for one whole year! Birthdays are always fun but this one was extra special.

November

In November we welcomed Dr. Deirdre Walsh. Not only a new member to the team but a whole new speciality service. Deirdre is a Counseling Psychologist and she is another amazing resource to have at McGowan Physio to be able to offer anyone who wishes to attend with her. As a clinic we got the joy of welcoming two transition year students in November. There was plenty of teaching in November as Niamh taught a workshop on hypermobility to the dedicated pilates teachers at Reform in Blackrock. Niamh O’F and Daniella attended the workshop too. Daniella also offered free 15 minute introductions to the reformer for anyone wishing to give it a try later in the month.

December

Before the mad rush to Christmas began we had a special treat, an online session with Siobhan O’Connell, An intro to meditation as Medicine. It was simply divine.

Reflection

Reflecting on the year 2022 brings only beautiful and positive memories and I feel full of gratitude for the brilliant people in my life who help ensure that every day is a good one. I am lucky that I love the career I have chosen and that I get to work with people who are topclass at what they do. I feel very grateful to all of the people and all of the families who choose to attend McGowan Physio. We really love getting to work with each of you.
