Meet Katie

Hello My name is Katie and I am 16 years old. I am from Co. Clare. I am the eldest of my three siblings. I will be doing some Ty work experience at McGowan Physio this week.

I found that she’s so good at explaining what I need to do and she really helps me to understand why I need to maintain my physiotherapy. She has helped my brother and me so much and we’re both really grateful to her.

Hobbies and Interests

I love to be active, I can’t seem to sit still for too long which leads to my list of hobbies and activities. I first started Irish dancing when I was 7. I absolutely fell in love with it, and I have been dancing ever since. I started football in primary school and I’ve been playing for 10 years. I love going to matches with all my friends. I like football as it is a team sport, however since I started golf last summer I have enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere which comes with playing. I play in Spanish point golf course. I also enjoy running. I competed in the sports days and I did training every Wednesday evening after school. We have a local badminton club which I attend . My brothers and I enjoy playing together as we can play teams 2V2. On my musical side. I’ve played the tin whistle. I’ve been playing the fiddle since I was 8. I know a little bit of a concertina, and I started playing a little bit of piano.

My Journey

I found out I had scoliosis when I was 15 years old. I had noticed that my body was not symmetrical so I went to a local physiotherapist and he said that I might have scoliosis. I didn’t know anything about it so it was quite scary to begin with. The first doctor I saw about my back, told me that I shouldn’t do all the exercise and sports that I love to do. He said what was the point of doing something that caused me pain. I left the hospital that day with so much sorrow and despair. I felt hopeless because someone told me I couldn’t do what I love to do.

Although when I went to Doctors and physiotherapists who understood scoliosis, I learned so much. Over the last few months of my growth spurt I worked really hard with my exercises that I managed to reduce my angle by a number of degrees.

Why I want to work at McGowan Physio

I want to get experience working in a physiotherapy environment because I have had an interest in physio since I tore the tendon in my leg. The recovery process took months and I really had to work hard with exercises to build up strength in my leg. Since discovering my scoliosis I have found that I still am very much interested in physiotherapy and strength and conditioning. I would like to work in the medical field and getting experience from McGowan physio is a great opportunity. I really like going to my appointments with Niamh because I always come out smiling and looking at the positive in every situation..
